Atmospheric experience: Sitting among our surroundings

Week Two.

We selected a spot within Massey perimeter, among the construction site by the Museum building, on the new grass. We sat and absorbed our surroundings. We were told to listen, smell, feel and sense.

The noises were vast; cicadas and bird life buzzing and chirping all around us, both near and far, while the wind blew past our faces. It was loud, and refreshing. The constant hum of vehicles in the distance, from the construction site and the roads near-by. The workers were talking but all we could hear was the quiet murmur of their voices.

There was a distinct smell of dirt, dirt and fertiliser. A faint cigarette smell also breezed past in the wind every one in a while.

The surfaces that surrounded us were a mixture of both organic and man-made. The bank where we sat, covered in it's lush grass was somewhat soft, and looked like a bed in comparison to the grey concrete that made up the museum building and the steps up to it.  We thought of the purposes of these surfaces, the concrete for stability and the grassy bank for freedom of mind - everyone needs a bit of nature every now and then.

Sitting on that shaded bank with my eyes closed, I found that I became very self-aware. I could feel the fabric of my clothes brushing against my skin in the breeze, I was aware of my posture and the positioning of my hands and feet. I don't know about the others, but I found that everything became much clearer with my senses once sight and placement was taken out off the table.

A sound recording was made during this time which will serve as a reminder.
